Isenbarger places 21st in NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships https://wkuherald.com/76911/sports/isenbarger-places-21st-in-ncaa-track-and-field-outdoor-championships/ https://wkuherald.com/76911/sports/isenbarger-places-21st-in-ncaa-track-and-field-outdoor-championships/#respond Tue, 11 Jun 2024 16:21:39 +0000 https://wkuherald.com/?p=76911 The NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships took place Saturday afternoon, where WKU was represented in the high jump by senior Katie Isenbarger.

Isenbarger is the first woman to compete at the outdoor championships for WKU in the high jump, as well as the first woman to represent WKU at the outdoor championships since Annastacia Forrester in 2019.  She cleared 1.77 meters at the championships, which placed her 21st and earned her All-American Honorable Mention honors.

“Just a little inconsistent today and couldn’t hit the big jump at the right time,” Track and Field Head Coach Brent Chumbley said. “Katie had a great year and we still have one more meet at the trials to cap off her stellar career.”

Isenbarger is leaving WKU with many accolades, including three Conference-USA titles (2019 outdoor, 2023 indoor, 2023 outdoor), while also being a member of the second-ranked high jump team according to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches association.

She was named first-team All-American in the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and second-team All-American at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships.  She also has six C-USA Field Athlete of the Week honors and three C-USA Track and Field All-Academic team honors under her belt.

In her final season as a Hilltopper, Isenbarger set a program record in the high jump with 1.88 meters at the Music City Challenge in April, while also grabbing first place six times this season.

She will have one final opportunity to add to her legacy on Saturday, June 22, as she goes to compete for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Graduate high jumper Katie Isenbarger is set to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships this weekend in Eugene, Oregon, following her May 25 qualifying jump at the NCAA East Regionals.

Isenbarger is the first Hilltopper to qualify for the outdoor championships since 2019 and becomes the first WKU athlete to qualify for both the indoor and outdoor championships in a career since Oliver Alexandre in 2018-2019.

She will also become the first Hilltopper to compete at the outdoor women’s high jump championships in program history, according to a press release from WKU athletics.

“For recruiting I hope people in the region realize…you can jump well at Western Kentucky. Her success will help with recruiting,” WKU Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brent Chumbley said in a June 3 press conference. “That exposure is advertising you can not buy.”

Isenbarger will compete in a field of 24 jumpers. The women’s high jump event is set to start Saturday at 4 pm CT.
